MYFOXNY.COM/AP -

Suffolk County police have stepped up patrols in Deer Park, Long Island after reports of strangers in cars following students near bus stops.

Parents of students at Robert Frost Middle School were notified of the incidents.

On Friday, a girl was walking to the bus stop near Washington Ave. and Hickory Ave. when a car slowed down and the child thought she was being followed.  The girl went back to her house.  A school official called 911 once the child got to school at about 8:49 a.m., said police.

There was one person in the black BMW SUV, according to the girl.

On Thursday, a small maroon or red car with tinted windows followed a female student near a different bus stop. That car also was on the wrong side of the street. She ran to her mother, who chased the car as it sped away, again running a stop sign.

Suffolk County Police say an investigation is underway.
