Vigil for murdered mother held in Rockwall

ROCKWALL, Texas -

Friends and family gathered in the parking lot near the movie theater at the Harbor in Rockwall where a mother of three was shot and killed. Police said she was murdered by her ex-boyfriend Saturday night in a shooting.

Police said the man who shot Jessica Aguilar and her current boyfriend was former Hunt County Constable Anthony Lewis.

According to police, Lewis lead them on a 30-mile, high speed chase. Shots were exchanged between Lewis and police and he was taken to Parkland hospital with injuries.

About 150 people turned out to the parking lot including Aguilar's three children, ages nine, 17 and 18, who have now lost both parents. Their father died a few years ago.

"I have a lot of unanswered questions, but this right here, everyone came out in the community and I really appreciate it. Give me the strength I'm going to need for these three kids. I lost my best friend," said Isabel Aguilar, Jessica's sister.

Aguilar's current boyfriend is expected to recover.

Several prayers were read and balloons were released at the end of the vigil. Jessica's brother could be heard saying, "There goes an angel." On several occasions, he stressed the importance of reporting domestic violence. Rockwall's mayor expressed his concern on the issue.

"I want to congratulate you and thank you that you're using this horrible time to transition to focus on domestic violence and understand that things like this can happen," said Mayor David Sweet of Rockwall.

The motive for the shooting is still unclear.

Aguilar's co-workers said Lewis had harassed her at work in the past. They said he once slashed her tires. Aguilar's family said they were unaware of the harassment incidents.

This is a reason the issue of domestic violence was stressed at the vigil.
