Federal grant to step up anti-texting enforcement

Posted: Updated:

DANBURY, Conn. (AP) - Danbury police are receiving a $275,000 federal grant to step up enforcement of laws banning texting while driving.

The News-Times of Danbury reports that Joe Cristalli, director of the state Department of Transportation's highway safety office, says Connecticut is 1 of 2 states selected for the demonstration program.

Danbury Police Chief Al Baker says enforcing the law is challenging because texting while driving can be easily concealed.

The program will include weeklong enforcement efforts beginning in June in several towns, including Danbury, Brookfield, Newtown and Monroe. It also will help increase public awareness of anti-texting laws.
