Garland police are investigating the shooting death of a 3-year-old boy in his home near Lake Ray Hubbard.
The accident happened around 6 p.m. Wednesday in the 4700 block of Maritime Cove.
The child, identified as John O'Brien, was shot in the head with a handgun. He was rushed to Children's Medical Center in Dallas but did not survive.
Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. They haven't yet said who pulled the trigger or where the gun came from. However, they do believe it was an accident.
Both of the boy's parents were at home at the time of the shooting and one of them called 911. Police said it does not appear there were any signs of violence at the home leading up to the incident.
Neighbors say the family is close knit.
"I saw the lights and heard the chopper. I came out front and this is so surprising and I hope the best for the family," said Dustin Chumley.
"I just came outside and noticed the police cars then I saw the baby get carried away on the stretcher," added Kerry Robinson.
Relatives are now caring for the boy's siblings, which range in age from 8 to 1 years old.
