A 3-year-old Garland boy who died earlier this week apparently shot himself.
According to a search warrant affidavit, John O'Brien found the loaded pistol at his parents' home on Wednesday and somehow fired it at his head.
Both parents and several of the boy's siblings were home at the time. But, Garland police said the boy's dad told them he did not know how he got the gun.
Police are investigating whether anyone in the home was negligent and made the weapon accessible to the child.
The search warrant affidavit specifically mentions the dad's phone and that he had been texting when officers arrived. Investigators want to see what those texts were all about and if they had anything to do with the gun.
No charges have been filed in the case.
