Pope Benedict the 16th gave his final Sunday blessing this morning.
Thousands of people packed St. Peter's Square in Vatican City to see the pope who delivered the routine blessing from his studio window.
The 85 year old is the first to retire from the papacy in 600 years.
He will make one more appearance at the square Wednesday.
The Catholic church will then begin the process of selecting his successor which is expected to take up to a month.
