HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -
A group of Milford High School students have been suspended for recording their own version of the "Harlem Shake," a song made popular thanks to hundreds of YouTube videos.
Alex Larson, an 18-year-old senior at the school, told the Oakland Press he and several of his friends were suspended for three to five days.
Larson also plays basketball for Milford High and told Fox 2's Jason Carr he is suspended for two games.
"I don't think a suspension is suitable," said suspended student Connor Adams.
"I don't think the punishment fits the crime," said Anthony Dawson, who is also suspended.
School officials told the Oakland Press that one video was removed from YouTube due to disturbing content. The other, the "Harlem Shake" video, also violated student conduct rules.
It was posted on YouTube by a user called "WhiteBoysMakingNoice" and had received nearly 17,000 views as of Monday afternoon.
The 34-second clip shows shirtless male students and a live duck dancing to the song by Brooklyn producer Baauer. The song features few lyrics and has a heavy dance-flavored beat.
The school issued this response:
The videos violated several areas of our student code of conduct, including provisions regarding vulgarity, indecency, misrepresentation and the use of racial slurs. Students involved lied to the teacher to gain access to the classroom.... Our students must be held accountable for their actions.
