A North Texas lawmaker wants to make Texas Independence Day a tax-free holiday for gun purchases.
State Representative Jeff Leach filed the Texas Gun Ownership Reinforcement Act. Under this legislation, there would be no sales tax on guns, ammunition, hunting equipment and other firearm accessories on March 2nd.
Leach says the bill would have economic benefits, similar to the Texas sales tax holiday for back-to-school items. He says it will also send a message about "Second Amendment issues" to other states.
"This is meant to encourage lawful gun ownership in Texas. We believe Texas should be taking the lead on this issue," Leach, a freshman representative from Plano, said.
If the bill is passed this session, it could take effect in time for next year's Texas Independence Day.
