Red Hook's Fairway reopens after renovations

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Fairway Market in Red Hook, Brooklyn, is more than just a supermarket -- it's a vital part of this community. And most importantly the reopening on Friday after the destruction caused by Superstorm Sandy is a sign that Red Hook is back, stronger than ever.

Grocery shoppers could hardly contain their excitement over the reopening of their beloved Fairway. Hundreds of shoppers lined up before it even opened its doors.

The beautiful 39,000-square-foot store, with every food and treat you could imagine, is a stark contrast of what it was 4 months ago when Sandy hit. The storm devastated the market, which had only opened in 2006.

In order to reopen, the owners had to gut the entire store.

During the renovations, Fairway's 400 workers, most of whom live in Red Hook, were bused to other Fairway locations.

But now the original workers are back and shoppers were definitely happy to see them.

Mayor Mike Bloomberg and several other dignitaries were also on hand for the grand reopening.

Even Sen. Chuck Schumer and Miss America talked about much they personally love their Fairway.

Other local businesses that have reopened include the Lobster Pound and Red Hook Winery.

When it comes to breaking through to the other side, forget Victoria's Secret. Another company, Australia-based HommeMystere, has already done it with lingerie for men.
