A south suburban man faces shooting-related charges, and a woman who was driving him early Thursday has been issued traffic citations for running through 11 stop signs and two red lights from a police chase last week that followed a shooting in the Englewood neighborhood. Two police officers were injured when the suspects' vehicle crashed with a squad car.
Gresham District officers were patrolling in a squad car when they heard shots fired and saw a weapon being thrown from a vehicle about 2 a.m. Thursday in the 8700 block of South Loomis Street, according to police.
The officers attempted to curb the vehicle but the driver refused to stop, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said.
Police pursued the vehicle until both vehicles crashed in the 7300 block of South Morgan Street.
Nathaniel Jakes, 36, and Mae Pettis, 31, were arrested and a weapon was recovered, police said.
Jakes, of the 18200 block of South Idlewild Drive in Country Club Hills, has been charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm from a vehicle, armed violence/discharging a weapon, and aggravated fleeing/bodily injury, all felonies, police said. He was ordered held on $350,000 bond Saturday and is next scheduled to appear in court Friday.
Pettis, of the 2100 block of West 77th Place, was cited with 11 counts of failure to stop at a stop sign, two counts of running a red light, driving on a suspended license, and driving without insurance. She is scheduled to appear in traffic court on April 30.
Two officers were hospitalized for observation, Gaines said.
