Gun bill would allow weapons into more areas

ATLANTA -

The state House is set to debate a sweeping gun rights bill. A key committee put the measure on the House agenda for action on Thursday.

House bill 512 opens new access points for guns in Georgia, allowing licensed gun owners to carry weapons into bars, churches and many areas of college campuses.

"Somebody should  be able to carry a weapon with a license – remember that means people who are over 21 -- to everywhere on the campus except for residents halls, fraternities and sororities where people live and athletic sporting events,"  Rep. Rick Jasperse (R-Jasper), the bill's sponsor.

Jasperse said that the rule is designed for who follow the rules.

The state House Rules Committee put the measure on the House calendar for a vote on "Crossover Day" -- the deadline for most bills to pass the house or senate.

State lawmakers have seen a list of gun bills in this session; House bill 512 has provisions from several of those measures.

So-called "campus carry" legislation followed robberies of students near Georgia Tech and Georgia State University in Atlanta. University System Chancellor Hank Huckaby and a Democratic Minority Leader Stacey Abrams say campus security is best left to police, not students.

"Too many opportunities, too many stresses that people will do the wrong thing with guns," Huckaby said.

"The concern that I have is that we're going to create a sense of vigilantism that doesn't actually increase the safety of citizens and that is a very dangerous place for us to be as a state," Abrams said.

The state Senate approved another gun bill this week that would stop local agencies from banning guns in public housing.
