A McKinney husband and father is in the Collin County jail, accused of murdering his wife.
Police said someone called 911 Wednesday afternoon to report a fire at a home near Pintail and Mallard Lakes Drives. The McKinney Fire Department found 44-year-old Mary Beth Merz lying unresponsive inside.
They found her husband, 42-year-old Eric Merz, with non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to the hospital, treated then released into police custody.
Merz is now charged with his wife's murder.
Police are not saying how Mary Beth died or if this was a murder-suicide attempt. The family's backyard fire pit was a focus in the investigation, but officers wouldn't say why.
A woman who lives next door, who didn't want to give her name, told FOX 4 she heard two pops.
Other neighbors said Merz was recently laid off, after working for the AT&T sales department for 17 years. They said Mary Beth also worked for AT&T from home.
They couple has two children -- a son in elementary school and a daughter in middle school. They were reportedly home when the incident occurred but were not hurt.
McKinney police and neighbors said the family has no history of violence. However, court records show Merz was arrested in San Antonio 12 years ago on charges of domestic violence.
He is being held on $150,000 bond.
