An alleged burglar crashed his car into a police cruiser after trying to get away from the scene of the crime.
Police said the man and his accomplice were stealing from cars parked near a 7-Eleven at the intersection of Good Latimer Expressway and Elm Street. As they drove away from the scene, the driver accidentally rammed his El Camino into a police car that was patrolling the area.
The El Camino driver then sped away and headed downtown. As he was driving on the wrong side of the road on Cadiz Street he collided head-on with an SUV near Akard Street. At that point, the driver ditched his passenger and started running.
Police and ambulance arrived at the scene of the second crash a short time later. The El Camino passenger was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The driver of the SUV happened to be an off-duty Dallas firefighter. She broke some bones when the burglary suspect hit her.
As police were looking for the El Camino driver they were approached by a homeless man who said he saw the suspect fleeing the accident. Officers found the man a short time later. He was arrested and taken to jail.
