Bar patrons capture robber

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A man who tried to rob a Long Island bar ended up being captured and held by  bar patrons until police could arrive and arrest the hapless crook.

It happened about 11:50 p.m. at Holbrook's Backporch Bar on Grunday Ave.

A masked man went into the watering hole, went behind the bar and threatened a female employee with a knife.  He demanded money and the woman handed it over.

The robber then attempted to take off, but the bar owner and several of the 15 people who were in the bar at the time stopped the man and held him until Suffolk County police officers arrived.

Police say Joseph Spevak, 32, was carrying three knives and several hundred dollars at the time of his arrest.

The Holbrook man faces robbery charges and was to be arraigned on Monday in Central Islip.

It was unclear if he had a lawyer.
