Thirteen years ago Haley Whatley was 5 years old and she had a big idea. She wanted to have North Texans donate new, stuffed bunnies to the patients at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth. Through the years she and the volunteers she's enlisted as her Bunny Ambassadors have made a huge difference in the lives of sick children.
Each year Whatley has gotten sponsors -- American Airlines, Build-A-Bear and Six Flags Over Texas just to name a few. She's inspired kids and adults to donate and this year she's set a record with 3,767 stuffed bunnies, bears and more.
This year's bunny drive is also bittersweet for Whatley, who is a high school senior preparing to go to college in South Carolina. The bunny drive has been a big part of her life since she was 5. But she has a tennis scholarship and plans to major in business so she can work with special needs children in a children's hospital.
Whatley has turned the bunny drive over to seventh grader Trudy Troublefield, who will be the new Chief Bunny Ambassador. She wants to thank everyone who has made this drive so very special and successful. She's proud to say the total number of stuffed animals they've donated is 28,772. Now, that's great medicine!
