Police: Officer killed nightclub shooting suspect

Posted: Updated:

A man who was firing a gun into a crowd during a nightclub fight was shot and killed by a Dallas police officer early Thursday morning.

According to the Dallas Police Department, a fight broke out between two large crowds of people pouring out of Club Icon in the 10,000 block of Technology Boulevard just after 2 a.m. Off-duty officers who were working at the club tried to break up that fight and had to call for backup.

Officer Christopher Timms reportedly saw a man with a gun firing into the crowd. Fearing for the safety of everyone around him, he shot the suspect, police said.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Tyrique Rashad Johnson, was rushed to the hospital and later died.

A second person was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Police said they are still working to determine if he was hit by a bullet from the officer's gun, the suspect's gun or another weapon.

Police estimate there were about 200 people in the crowd outside the nightclub. Many of the witnesses were interviewed by police.

Officer Timms was placed on administrative leave for a routine investigation.

He has been with the department since 2006.
