Prosecutors and defense attorneys have given their opening statements at the tax evasion trial of influential Cook County Commissioner William Beavers.
Prosecutors on Thursday displayed check after check that they say Beavers signed to withdraw cash from his campaign fund. They accuse him of using the money on gambling and other personal uses. Beavers has pleaded not guilty.
His defense attorney, Sam Adam Jr., paced, waved his arms, joked and shouted during his opening statement in Chicago federal court.
He said Beavers' gambling was not one of the things politicians couldn't spend campaign cash on.
He also claimed Beavers eventually paid back nearly 87 percent of the more than $250,000 that the government says he didn't report.
