EMU students host 2nd annual 'Glitz & Glam' prom dress drive

Posted: Updated:

PINK Detroit is hosting their 2nd annual 'Glitz & Glam' prom drive, to make sure every girl gets to experience her high school prom.

Last May the girls held the first prom drive at Ypsilanti High School where girls who did not have a prom dress could come and pick out a dress from the donated collection. During the drive PINK recruited several professional hair stylists and make-up artists who volunteered to do the girls' hair and make-up free of charge. This year the event is being hosted in Detroit, in an effort to make the event a citywide experience, instead of just limiting the services to one high school.

"Well, I actually chose the prom dress drive because around this time last year I was actually sitting in the beauty salon and I overheard a girl telling her friend that she wasn't going to go to prom because prom dresses cost too much and then I immediately thought about my prom dress that I have hanging in my closet and then I realized there's so many girls who don't go to prom because of that reason, so what better way to give back to them," said Janae' Griggs, PINK Detroit founder.

Beyond fancy dresses, the drive includes formal shoes, accessories, and hair and make-up appointments. PINK Detroit is an organization of young women who have ties to the city of Detroit in some way and strive to help rebuild the city in every shape, form and fashion. PINK Detroit hosts and attends community events, works with similar organizations in the city and mentors young girls in grades 6-12. Their mission is to empower residents to strive for success above their current limitations. PINK Detroit says they remember what their prom experience was like and could not possibly imagine a young lady not being able to attend prom due to financial limitations.

The organization has approximately 30 dresses so far, including some formal evening gowns.
The prom dress drive still needs more supporters. If you would like to donate, visit one of the locations below or call (313)-355-4042. PINK Detroit can also pick up the dresses.
