Barnegat Bay storm debris removal

Posted: Updated:

The Atlantic Ocean met the Barnegat Bay in the hours after Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey and pushed a whole lot of debris from Mantoloking, a town on the barrier islands, into the bay.

Debris-removal crews pulled a BMW and a Mercedes from water on Friday.

Buddy Young, director of operations with Alabama-based Crowder Gulf, has seen his fair share of debris removal projects from Katrina to Sandy

Crowder Gulf was contracted in by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection with one goal in mind: to get the bay cleaned out by summer.

Crews are able to locate items in the water by using sonar. Once they spot an image that looks like debris they put a GPS location on it and then in comes a picker barge.

Bigger projects, such as taking a house out of the bay, will take some time as Crowder Gulf waits for orders from the state government
