CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Thousands of attendees, dressed in green, gathered in the freezing temperatures on Saturday morning for a five decade's old Chicago tradition.
People cheered as 40 pounds of bright green dye were released into the Chicago river, Meanwhile a man dressed as a leprechaun entertained the crowd on a water propelled fly-board.
Julie Hansen and her friend flew in this morning from Minneapolis to celebrate St. Patrick's Day stating, "We don't have a green river at home."
The ingredients in the dye are a closely guarded secret but it is environment friendly. The Chicago Journeymen Plumbers are responsible for the tinting of the water, which kicked off the St. Patrick's Day festivities.
At noon, the parade began downtown at Columbus and Balbo Drive in Grant Park. Former Mayor Richard Daley made an appearance wishing everyone a "wonderful St. Patty's Day."
