CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Police responding to a shooting that left a man critically wounded exchanged gunfire with two men Tuesday afternoon in the South Side Englewood neighborhood, authorities said.
Englewood District officers responded about 4:35 p.m. to a call of shots fired near South Princeton Avenue and West 58th Street and found a man with a gunshot wound, police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.
Paramedics took the 18-year-old man to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition, according to Fire Media Affairs.
The responding officers saw a man with a gun, but when the suspect saw the officers he tried to run away, Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said. While running away, the man fired shots at the pursuing officers, who returned fire.
Nobody was struck and the suspect was taken into custody, Camden said. His gun was recovered.
"Police are out there responding to gunshots, and they are right on the scene and take hopefully the shooter [of the 18-year-old] into custody," Camden said.
About the same time, a second man in the area attempted to run into a house, but before he got inside he too opened fire on police officers, Camden said. Police returned fire but nobody was wounded.
That man was also taken into custody and a weapon recovered, Camden said.
Area South detectives are conducting an on-going investigation, police said.
