Girl abducted, shoved in van recalls terrifying moments

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A south suburban family is sharing a horrific story after their young daughter was nearly abducted Monday.

The honor student was home alone in Matteson when she walked just 25 feet outside to get the mail. Seconds later, she says, she was snatched up and blindfolded by two men.

"I was walking to the mailbox and I saw a car turning the corner real fast," the girl said in an exclusive interview with FOX 32. "It stopped and a guy jumped out and he threw me in the van."

When she got shoved inside, the girl says she was already planning her escape.

The pre-teen was able to give police a good description of the abductors, as well as the van she was thrown in. Her parents say it could've been the last ride of their little girl's life.

"It was like a green van dark green it only had windows driver and passenger seats in the front and it didn't have any windows on the side of the van," she explains.

The young girl says the rest of the van was gutted with nothing inside. It was cold and empty.

The girl told her parents and Matteson police that the abductors drove her around for five or six minutes, traveling about two miles, before they opened the rear doors, pulled her out, and took the blindfold off.

They were near a field when the girl says she saw that as an opportunity to run for it.

"I just said ‘I want to see my family again,'" the girl explains. "I saw he was distracted and I just ran."

She says her cell phone was in her pocket. It broke when she was thrown into the van, but it worked and when she started running, she called her parents who were out running errands less than a mile away.

"She said, ‘Daddy, they took me,'" the girls' father says. "And I said, ‘who?' and ‘where are you?' and she told me what street she was running down."

The girl was able to draw a picture of the abductors for investigators, who she said were laughing the entire time.

Matteson detectives say they are investigating and they want residents to be on the lookout for the two men and the green cargo van.

Police and school officials in Matteson also sent out an email blast to residents.
