Women the main breadwinner in one-fourth of households

Posted: Updated:

A major shift is taking place in the workforce. More women are becoming the breadwinners at home.

A new study that included data from the census shows that a record number of women are bringing home more money than their spouses.

Also, more men are now staying home while their wives bring home the bacon.

In 1988, 16-percent of women made more than their husbands. Last year, the number grew to 28-percent. That equates to about 12 million households.

The figures indicate that education plays a huge role in this.

Most colleges are now graduating more women than men, and females are earning about 57-percent of bachelor's degrees in this country, and about 60-percent of all master's degrees.

But despite all of this, wage inequality still exists. On average, women get paid 77-cents for every dollar a man earns doing the same work.
