Woman dies after basement apartment fire

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -

Authorities are investigating the death of a woman who was found when firefighters responded to a blaze in the basement of a home near Gainesville.

Hall County Fire Marshal Capt. Scott Cagle said the woman, in her 40s, was found in a basement apartment of the home off Browns Bridge Road shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday. She was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Cagle tells The Times of Gainesville (http://bit.ly/X0UPzn) that it appeared the blaze started in the basement. A fire investigator was sent to determine cause, but it wasn't available Thursday night.

Cagle said an autopsy was to be done Friday to determine the woman's cause of death.
