Multiple people hit on Brooklyn sidewalk

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Nine people were injured, two critically, when a car drove onto a Brooklyn sidewalk on Saturday.

A toddler was among the critically injured.

Denim McLein and his mother, Wendy, were among 10 people injured Saturday evening in the East Flatbush section.

The boy's aunt told the New York Post that Denim was likely brain-dead and his mother was in a semi-coma.

Wendy McLein owns a nightclub in Bedford-Stuyvesant called Denim's Cafe.

It happened about 6:45 p.m. at Utica Ave. and Church Avenue.

The car also hit scaffolding during the accident and part of it collapsed.

The driver told investigators that her brakes failed before she went through a red light and jumped the curb at Church and Utica avenue around 6:30 p.m.

The driver passed a breathalyzer test and was not charged.

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
