College professor on LI acquitted of sex abuse

Posted: Updated:

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A former Long Island community college professor has been acquitted of charges that he had inappropriate sexual contact with a student three years ago.

Alfred Magrella of Dix Hills was found not guilty Monday of forcible touching and sex abuse.

His lawyer says Magrella feels that the justice system worked, but took too long. He was initially suspended with pay by Nassau Community College. He has since retired.

Attorney John LoTurco said the math professor was first accused of molesting the student in April 2010.

LoTurco tells Newsday that about a year ago, the woman changed her story, saying Magrella had raped her. The district attorney chose not to bring rape charges against Magrella.

The prosecutor declined to comment on the acquittal.
