Suspect arrested in attempted rape of runner in Forest Park

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Cops on Tuesday arrested a man suspected of sexually assaulting and trying to rape a woman who was running in Forest Park in Queens on Friday.

Authorities charged Richard Kassebaum, 42, of Queens, with attempted predatory sexual assault, attempted rape and sex abuse.

The NYPD believes that Kassebaum came up behind the runner, shocked her with a stun gun, grabbed her iPhone, and then sexually assaulted her at about 7:25 p.m. on March 29, 2013.

She managed to fight off her attacker as he tried to take off her shirt, and then a couple walking their dog interrupted the attack, according to reports.

The victim was treated at Queens General Hospital.

Gothamist.com reported that Kassebaum served time in prison for killing his aunt in 1990.

Several beaches on the New Jersey and New York coastlines are open to visitors but closed to swimming because of high surf and dangerous rip currents. The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement for the area beaches because of the effects of Hurricane Cristobal, which is expected to track south and east of the Jersey shore through Thursday.

The U.S. Open is underway in Queens and there's no denying that many of the players, both men and women, are in great physical shape and know how to play that up. Women are particularly promoted in the industry as attractive, fashionable and fiercely competitive. Does that help the game and draw more people in?
