Ex-NBA player Javaris Crittenton indicted on murder, gang charges

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

A Fulton County grand jury indicted former Georgia Tech and NBA star Javaris Crittenton on murder and gang charges on Tuesday.  The indictment alleges that Crittenton shot and killed an Atlanta mother of four as part of a gang-related retaliation for an earlier armed robbery.

Crittenton, 25, is accused of killing 23-year-old Julian Jones in August 2011. Jones was gunned down as she walked with a group of friends along Macon Drive in southwest Atlanta, according to police.

"Obviously this is very disconcerting to our office that gang activity extends beyond just the street level but actually ventures into professional sports and what type of message that actually sends to the young people here in the city of Atlanta," said Gabriel Banks, Fulton County's deputy district attorney.

The indictment alleges that Crittenton, who grew up in Atlanta and played basketball at Georgia Tech, joined the Los Angeles-based Mansfield Gangster Crips after he was drafted into the NBA.

"It is not uncommon for individuals involved in professional athletes to actually join criminal street gangs for protection," said Banks.

Crittenton and his cousin, Douglas Gamble, are being charged with murder, felony murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and criminal street gang activity for the murder of Jones and the attempted murder of another man a few days earlier.

Crittenton was arrested in Los Angeles back in August 2011. He was granted $230,000 bond. His case will now be assigned to a Fulton County Superior Court judge and scheduled for trial.
