Serial rape suspect charged with 2 Lake Highlands assaults

Posted: Updated:

Dallas police arrested a serial rape suspect who they say committed at least two of three Lake Highlands rapes.

Cesar Benitez, 30, was arrested Tuesday and charged with rapes committed Feb. 22 and March 15.

He is expected to be charged with the third rape.

Police say they had been watching Benitez and tried to pull him over Tuesday afternoon for traffic violations.

He led them on a chase, then ran away on foot. Police caught him and took him into custody.

Police say Benitez confessed, gave details that only the rapist and victims would know and provided a DNA sample.

DPD Chief David Brown says a March 25 tip led officers to the suspect.

"The tipster gave specific information about the suspect," Brown said, "particularly the scratch marks that we were talking about in our initial briefing, that the suspect may have."

Benitez is in jail on a $4.5 million bond.
