MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A key witness in a Cobb County murder trial has recanted her testimony after the man accused in the slaying was sentenced to life plus 47-1/2 years in prison.
Loretta Spencer Blatz says she was suffering from depression and was under the influence of painkillers and other substances when she testified against Waseem Daker, who was convicted last September in the 1995 death of Delta flight attendant Karmen Smith. Smith and Blatz were roommates and Daker had already served 10 years in prison for stalking Blatz before being convicted in Smith's slaying.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/ZdiNUO ) reports Daker asked for a new trial, and that he and Blatz met during a paintball trip in 1994. Blatz says he became obsessed with her and Daker says they were in a relationship.
