Blue trees in Norcross bring environmental message

Posted: Updated:
NORCROSS, Ga. -

Norcross is turning blue! The Blue Trees Project is exactly what it sounds like -- cities painting their trees electric blue!  It was an idea by Australian artist Konstantine Dimopoulos to inspire environmental awareness and talk about trees and deforestation.

"There are no blue trees.  Blue trees do not exist," said Dimopoulos.

That might have been true one week ago, but in Norcross on Monday blue trees could be seen!

"Once it dries, it actually changes color, which is quite dramatic," said Dimopoulos.

Dimopoulos is an artist, sculptor and tree painter. Back in 2005, he got the idea for a project to get people talking about trees and the issue of deforestation. His plan included blue pigment, water, paint rollers and cities around the world.

"Melbourne, Australia, and then we went to Vancouver, Canada in three cities," Dimopoulos said.

A dozen communities later, Norcross joins the list with an army of blue-brandished brushes to bestow the bark.

"I think they're terrific!  I think it's exciting and it's definitely getting the community engagement I was hoping for," said Tixie Fowler with the city of Norcross

Eventually, the blue will wash away. After all, it's not really paint covering the trees, but a pigment. The hope for everyone is that the message lasts far longer.

"We transform and change ecosystems around the world daily, and yet, when we have a small change in our community, often it creates unease, and that's the part of the project we're trying to get through," said Dimopoulos.

Good Day's Paul Milliken was in Norcross on Monday to get a first hand look at the blue trees!

I think this is what many of us assume about outlet mall shopping -- we get rock bottom prices on everything from clothes to housewares on brand names that are either leftovers from last year or this year's overstock. Well, it's not quite like that.
