Fans fork over cash for tickets to Big Dance

ATLANTA -

Some college hoop fans are willing to pay anything for a ticket to the NCAA championship game, but authorities say use caution.

Louisville fan Jeremy "Birdman" Cooper didn't want to risk buying tickets off the street, so he purchased paperless tickets online.

"With the new flash tickets, you really can't scalp a ticket. It's downloaded to an account, and you have to swipe your ID or your credit card to walk into the game," Cooper said.

Larry Robinson bought a pair of tickets from a man in the Georgia Dome parking lot for $1,500.

"Well, they're about the price that StubHub would sell. They were about twice the amount as a ticket costs," Robinson said. "We had to be here."

But some fans are just happy to be here in Atlanta for all the festivities, and are not willing to pay hundreds of dollars to see the game itself.

John Stapleton watched Louisville take it all back in 1986, but says he can't afford today's prices.

"$100 back then, but now this is crazy. They're talking starting at five and got tickets all the way up to $5,000. That's robbery," Stapleton said.

A brother and sister duo drove 12 hours from Michigan to watch Wolverines try to win it all. But even they had a price limit, so they purchased tickets online.

"We did all the research on what sections we wanted to go to. We found the best one for our price range and bought them and no looking back," Matthew Mehalko said.

The NCAA advises fans against buying tickets from a third party. It says it's best to buy them from an official source.

State law also prohibits re-selling of tickets for any price within 2700 feet of the Georgia Dome.
