Posted: Updated:

A man who escaped from custody at a Denton County court was wounded when authorities tried to arrest him.

Alberto Contreras, 19, was able to get out of the courtroom Wednesday morning while the bailiff was in a holding cell with another prisoner, according to the Denton County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities began a search for Contreras and he was eventually found shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday in the 6600 block of Grissom Rd. in Denton.

When officials tried to take Contreras into custody, he resisted and shots were fired.

Contreras suffered a gunshot wound to the arm and was transported to the hospital. The injury is considered non-life threatening.

No officers were injured in the incident. Contreras will face additional charges for escaping custody.

The deputy who fired his weapon is on administrative leave, per standard policy according to sheriff's officials.
