Hakkens get public defender, no bond

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

The parents accused of kidnapping their own kids and sailing to Cuba will be staying in jail for now.  A judge set no bail for Josh and Sharyn Hakken.

Investigators say the Hakkens, after losing custody of their two young boys, kidnapped the children and set sail for Cuba, prompting an Amber alert.

Cuba returned the family to the U.S. late Tuesday.  The boys, Chase and Cole, were OK, but Josh and Sharyn face several charges, including kidnapping, burglary, and child neglect.

At this morning's court appearance, the couple -- each clad in bright red high-profile jail jumpsuits -- appeared separately via video feed before Judge Walter Heinrich. Neither spoke during their brief appearances.

Since they do not have enough money to hire a private attorney, they will be represented by a public defender.

Their next court appearance is Monday.

Deputies also said Thursday that Cuban authorities told them they confiscated an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a handgun from Josh Hakken when the boat arrived in Havana.

Detectives believe Josh tied up the boys' grandmother and stole her car during the kidnapping last week.
