New Bush presidential center gets green award

Posted: Updated:

Officials at the new George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas say they've received a top certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for the center's energy and environmental design.

The center's president, Mark Langdale, said Thursday the designation reflects the former president and his wife's longstanding commitment to conservation and caring for the land.

The Bush Center uses roofing systems that reduce heating and cooling demands, solar panels for electricity and hot water, regional building materials to cut down transportation demands and rainwater recycling for irrigation.

A 15-acre park has native Texas landscape, drought-tolerant grasses, Texas wildflowers and more than 900 trees, including 40 transplanted from the Bush ranch in Crawford.

Formal dedication of the center is set for April 25.
