New tests, more stress for NYC children?

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The brand new, more challenging standardized tests for New York City school students will begin on Tuesday. Some parents say their children are feeling stressed out.

School officials say they'll use the scores to find out students and strengths and weaknesses and they just want kids to do their best.

"This is a new test, it's harder, it will be a baseline for the whole city, and it is part of a national effort to improve the rigors of our classroom and make sure what we are doing will make the kids stronger," said Shael Polakow-Suransky, chief academic officer of the Education Department.

But some are wondering whether the new, exams called common core, are causing young students greater stress.

School officials say there are tips on the Education Department website for parents and students about the upcoming common core state tests and tips to help the students feel more comfortable about the new, harder exams.
