Texas Motor Speedway's General Manager Eddie Gossage says NASCAR is backing down from its statement that it might re-evaluate the standards for sponsorship.
"It's partly a CYA and partly a statement they are very regrettable today that they made yesterday," Gossage said.
Gossage says he was told by senior NASCAR officials they stand by their choice to make the National Rifle Association the title sponsor of Saturday's race. Earlier Friday, NASCAR said it might take a look at how it approves sponsors after receiving backlash for the NRA 500.
Gossage maintains the backlash wasn't serious and didn't reflect NASCAR fans' views. He blamed the media for creating the "controversy."
"Nationwide there have been fewer than a dozen cards and letters sent. That's not the people that's the media that's trying to fan the flames to make a big deal about it," Gossage said. "It's not a big deal."
