Cubs tie record with 5 wild pitches in inning

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Cubs tied a major league record when Edwin Jackson and Michael Bowden combined to throw five wild pitches in an inning.

Jackson threw two and Bowden three as the San Francisco Giants scored four runs in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead Sunday.

Rick Ankiel of the St. Louis Cardinals threw five wild pitches in the third inning of the 2000 NL division series opener against Atlanta that Oct. 3. Bert Cunningham of Buffalo threw five in the first inning in the Players League - then considered a major league - on Sept. 15, 1890.

Jackson had already allowed an RBI double by Gregor Blanco in the sixth when he let in another run with his second wild pitch of the inning.

Bowden came in when Nick Noonan pinch hit for pitcher Tim Lincecum and threw a wild pitch before Noonan hit a go-ahead, two-run single. Bowden threw two more wild pitches, walked Angel Pagan and got Marcio Scutaro to hit into an inning-ending double play.
