CLAWSON, Mich. (WJBK) -

Leo Barry of Clawson knew that if his brother, Gene Barry, ran the Boston Marathon in his usual time, he would have been crossing the finish line just as the explosions went off.

"If he would have made his 4:10, he would have been right there," Leo Barry says. "It's a holiday there, there's a ball game...it's awful."

The magnitude of what happened hit Leo hard as he watched every moment of coverage from his home in Clawson. However, it didn't set in for his brother, Gene, until he made it back to his Boston hotel. There, he saw the horrifying images on the news and called his brother to let him know he was ok.

"It's just nuts, looking at pictures now of all the smoke, of what happened," Gene Barry says. "My qualifying time would have been four hours and ten minutes," he says. "I'm fortunate that I had a bad day."

Gene Barry has run dozens of marathons, including this premier race, but he says he never imagined something like this could ever happen.

"It really goes beyond words to think ordinary people get blown up," he says. "All they are doing running a marathon. It makes no sense."
