Arizona Senate approves new teacher evaluations

PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Senate has passed a bill that would make it easier to fire some low-performing teachers.
House Bill 2500 would allow experienced teachers to be placed on probationary status if they received the lowest rating on one yearly performance review. That status allows a school board to fire a teacher with little notice.
The Senate voted 19-11 to pass the bill on Tuesday, nearly two works after rejecting the legislation.
The Senate voted 14-15 against the measure on April 4, with two Republicans joining all 13 Senate Democrats in rejecting the bill.
The Republican-led House passed the bill in a 50-7 vote in February.
Critics say an overhaul of evaluations passed last year still isn't fully implemented and lawmakers should allow that to happen before passing additional changes.
