Homeowner to potential squatters: “I’m watching you!”

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) -

Squatter's beware! One homeowner on Detroit's west side is on the defense. A very clear message is plastered all over the property warning squatters to stay out.

The windows are boarded up, covered with words scribbled with red spray paint. The garage door is even covered with two giant eyes warning, "Don't let me catch you!"

But another sentence written on the garage door is getting neighbor's attention: "I will shoot you."

Many wonder if posting signs instigating gun violence is even legal. Fox 2 legal analyst Charlie Langton says as long as it's on your own property it's fine, but that's all you can do.

"If somebody is living in my house, and someone comes into my house - yes, I can shoot that person. However, if this is a vacant house, and nobody is living there, I can't just go in there to find someone and then go shoot them. No, that would be murder, simple as that," explains Langton.

Wayne County records say the house with the warnings was forfeited last month. All of the homeowner's previous phone numbers and addresses are dead ends, so for now there's no face behind the eyes watching the house.
