Security beefed up at sports venues, events

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

In the wake of the deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday, officials and event organizers are beefing up security at venues throughout the tristate region.

Officials have categorized sporting events as 'vulnerable' and- as in the case of a marathon- a 'soft target.'

Before the Brooklyn Nets take on the Detroit Pistons at the Barclays Center on Wednesday night, extra police will be on hand to ensure fans' and players' safety.

The same holds true at Madison Square Garden where the Knicks take on the Atlanta Hawks.

Nassau County officials are meeting Wednesday to discuss security preparations for the upcoming Long Island Marathon.

County Executive Edward Mangano says the risk assessment meeting comes in the wake of Monday's bombings in Boston.

The Long Island event is largely run on the Meadowbrook Parkway between Jones Beach in Wantagh and Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Mangano declined to comment on whether officials are considering altering the route because of security concerns, but vowed security would be increased.

He says state officials also will be involved in security planning since the Meadowbrook is a state-owned highway.

Last year, about 6,600 runners participated in the race that began in 1973. Mangano says 5,100 have signed up this year.

Mangano also reminded residents to participate in the "See Something Say Something" campaign.

Extra security was on hand at Yankee Stadium for Tuesday night's game. Despite the security, fans were ready to show their solidarity with Boston. The crowd sang along to 'Sweet Caroline,' a song regularly heard at the Red Sox home of Fenway Park.

The NFL plans to take what investigators learn in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing and incorporate it into its security plans for the cold-weather Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium.

The league said Tuesday that it has raised its security levels for all its games and events since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
