Better Business Bureau offers free shredding event Saturday

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Better Business Bureau is hosting an event to help prevent identity theft.

According to the BBB, "more than 19 million Americans have been the victims of identity-related fraud over the past two years."  So, in efforts to combat these types of crimes, the BBB welcomes the Metro Detroit community to come out Saturday, April 20 to their office (26777 Central Park Blvd. Southfield MI 48076) from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. for "Secure Your ID Day."

Those who attend can bring up to three paper bags or card board boxes full of sensitive paper documents to be shredded free of charge.  Each additional bag or box can be shredded for $10. Global Electric Electronic Processing (GEEP) will also be at the event collecting used desktop PC's, laptops, televisions, hard drives and a host of other electronic devices. They will also be accepting used cell phone donations. All proceeds from shredding and cell phone donations will benefit the BBB Educational Foundation.

Those who attend this event can also visit certified counselors from Greenpath Debt Solutions who will be on-site. They will be discussing the services they have to offer and will be available for one-on-one counseling sessions. Please note that BBB says they will only service cars that are in line as of 12:30 p.m Saturday. This event is an opportunity to dispose of sensitive information that could make you vulnerable to identity related fraud and theft. Such information should not be put in the trash as that can become an identity thief's treasure.

For more information please visit the BBB website at detroit.bbb.org/secure-your-id or contact Doris Hendricks at 248-799-0305.
