CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Two people were injured, one critically, in a Friday afternoon chain reaction crash in northwest suburban Crystal Lake.

Four vehicles were traveling north on Illinois Route 31 when three came to a stop because of traffic congestion about 2:55 p.m. near Illinois Route 175, according to a release from Crystal Lake police.

A fourth vehicle struck the vehicle in front of it, which "careened" into a third vehicle, which then struck a fourth vehicle, police said.

Paramedics took two motorists to Centegra-Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry, one in critical condition and another with non-life-threatening injuries.

Traffic was diverted for about an hour while crews tended to the injured and cleared the scene, police said.

No citations have been issued as of Friday night.
