NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY) -- Principal Sharon Moffat of Readington Middle School in New Jersey sent a letter home to parents about what students should wear at the upcoming dinner dance. The letter stated that young ladies should wear a skirt or a dress with straps.

But according to parent Charlotte Nijenhuis, her daughter Claudine says the principal held an assembly saying something totally different: that if girls showed up with strapless dresses on they wouldn't be allowed into the dance.

"For me it's more about the message: that you're judged by what you wear and that boys are distracted by bare shoulders. It's just ridiculous. My daughter is a good kid; she's a good student. This should be a fun time for them," said Melissa May.

The school's principal wasn't available for an interview. Superintendent Barbara Sargent said: "Readington Township School District has a policy regarding dress code which is being universally applied to the school day and school events -- we regret that a small number of families are upset by this and we welcome their input and communication."

The dinner dance is scheduled for June 14.
