FORT WORTH -

A Fort Worth police officer was shot and the suspect is dead after a gunfight this morning.

It happened on the city's east side in the 6400 block of Brentwood Drive around 6:30 a.m.

The officer had responded to a reported holdup at a Whataburger and then chased the gunman into a nearby neighborhood.

Sources say the suspect was shot three times.

Officer Marty Stone suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, and treated his own wound.

"The officer takes out scissors, cuts his uniform pants, puts a tourniquet on and applies pressure to stop this bleeding," said Fort Worth police chief Jeff Halstead of Stone's action.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was later declared dead.

The officer has been on the force eight years and was out of the hospital by the end of the day on Wednesday.
