The brother of a former NFL player from North Texas is accused of stabbing their parents to death.
Bryant Bassey, 34, is charged with capital murder. Police said he stabbed and killed them sometime between Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
Police say relatives hadn't heard from Bernard Bassey, 61, or Joy Bassey, 69, since Monday.
They called police after they said Bryant Bassey made some strange statements Tuesday morning.
On Wednesday morning, Garland police did a welfare check at the request of the couple's senior apartment complex in north Garland. The complex is located on Bluebonnet Circle. Officers found the dead couple. Police said nothing appeared to be stolen.
"From what we saw yesterday, it definitely looked like a significant attack, a violent attack. Once we saw this, the information we were getting led us to believe the attacker was known," said Mike Hatfield from the Garland Police Department.
Police also learned Bryant Bassey had been involved in a car accident in Farmer's Branch with a car stolen from near their neighborhood.
Bassey was taken to Parkland Hospital to recover from his injuries. He will be transferred to the Dallas County Jail. His bond is set at $1 million.
Garland police have yet to determine a motive.
Bassey was arrested in 2002 for injury to an elderly person. He also was involved in a civil custody suit over his daughter.
Bryant Bassey's brother is former NFL defensive back Eric Bassey. He played for North Garland High School before joining the Buffalo Bills and St. Louis Rams.
