Flight delays across the country due to furloughs

Posted: Updated:
The National Air Traffic Controllers Association says there have been 5,800 flight delays across the country for the three-day period beginning Sunday, when Federal Aviation Administration furloughs took effect.

On one day alone, Tuesday, approximately 1, 025 flights were delayed as a result of the cuts that kicked in last month.

FAA officials said they had no choice but to furlough all 47,000 agency employees, including nearly 15,000 controllers. Each employee will lose one day of work every other week. The FAA also said that planes will have to take off and land less frequently, so as not to overload the remaining controllers on duty.

A bi-partisan group of 33 senators is sponsoring a bill to delay the FAA furloughs for 30 days to figure out an alternative that creates fewer delays.
