Gilbert High teacher arrested on assault charge

Posted: Updated:
GILBERT, Ariz. -

A teacher at Gilbert High School has been arrested, accused of slapping a student during class. He's been put on administrative leave from the school.

Gilbert Police say that 67-year-old Daniel A. Dunn, the former football coach, hit a student across the face with the back of his hand.

Police are still interviewing classmates to see what happened, as there have been some conflicting reports.

The student involved said Dunn struck him across the face. It happened when the student was laughing at the teacher, who was scolding another student. The victim says his hat flew off when he was struck. He reported the incident after class.

"There was an argument going on in class and TJ got in the argument. I don't think it started with him in it. Then he started talking, it just got out of control and Mr. Dunn backhanded TJ," says student Tanner Wingo.

"That's still unacceptable that you'd do that at a school. You're a teacher, not someone to fight with," says student Jacob Myers.

Dunn says he didn't mean to strike his student -- he says he was trying to motion for the student to get back into his seat, and when he did that, he happened to hit him in the face.

According to the report, some of the students interviewed also believe it was unintentional. The investigation is ongoing.
