PCH hosts event to recycle old, expired car seats

Posted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. -

Did you know most car seats expire within six years after they're made?

Phoenix Children's Hospital is hosting the fifth annual Keep Our Planet Neat, Recycle Your Car Seat event on Friday to get rid of potentially dangerous, expired car seats.

Stop by locations around the valley to drop off any unwanted car seats, or get your current car seat checked for safety. Get a full list of locations here.

Over 700 car seats were recycled during last year's event.

"Plastic car seats break down over time - especially in the Arizona sun. The harness can actually break through the car seat if a car seat is used past its expiration date," said Angelica Baker, Child Safety Passenger Coordinator with PCH.

Miss Arizona, Piper Stoeckel, will be at the Tempe Marketplace location to help volunteers demolish hundreds of car seats.

Parents are also reminded to never use a car seat that has been in a moderate to severe vehicle crash.
